The Sasak Story of Clay Pots
For many generations, the local Sasak craftswomen on the island of Lombok have made hand crafted pottery which represents one of the most ancient Indonesian craft traditions. Sourcing clay used for Sasak pottery is from hills up above the three main villages where the pottery is made. Every one of these villages has their own distinctive style when making clay pots, with a different process and a different motif used in their designs.
Since the early part of the 16th century the village women of Lombok have been producing clay pottery. In a tradition called “turun temurun”, their unique skills are continually passed on from mother to daughter and, despite the use of very simple tools, there is a remarkably high level of skill in their pottery. With no potter’s wheel being used, instead the maker herself moves around the object to press the clay into the desired shape whilst adding layers continually to the original piece of dough.
When the clay pots have finished being formed, they are fired in a simple outdoor kiln that is fired with wood straw and rice husks, which in turn gives each piece its own unique fire markings.
